After getting married, they both secured jobs with different organizations. Despite their busy schedules, they maintained their commitment to each other and their goal of starting a family. They read books, researched, and attended parenting classes together, preparing themselves for the immense responsibility of parenthood.
When they learned that they were expecting their first child, they were ecstatic. They eagerly awaited the arrival of their bundle of joy, preparing for their new role as parents. Part of their preparation involved educating themselves on the benefits of breastmilk and the art of breastfeeding. They learned that exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months could significantly reduce the risk of their child contracting certain illnesses and diseases.
Mrs AG was determined to breastfeed her child exclusively. She communicated her plans to her employer and requested accommodations to support her breastfeeding journey. She suggested creating a space at the workplace or allowing her to go intermittently to breastfeed outside the work premises. However, her request was bluntly refused.
Mr AG supported his wife and suggested she quit the job as it was not worth sacrificing their child’s health. Despite financial concerns, they agreed to pursue their goal of exclusively breastfeeding their child, and Mrs AG resigned from her job.
Their decision paid off. Their first child was healthy, and they saved money on medical bills.
However, it was not an easy journey. Mrs AG faced criticism from friends and family who believed that it was not necessary to quit work to breastfeed. She struggled with feelings of inadequacy for not contributing to the family’s income, despite Mr AG’s reassurances.
It took two years for Mrs AG to secure another job in a different organization. One year after her employment, they were blessed with their second child. Although her new job provided a two-month paid maternity leave, there was no facility for lactating mothers or the option to leave the premises to breastfeed.
Mrs AG faced a tough decision. She couldn’t sacrifice her job due to the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, which had affected their family’s finances. She had to work and provide for her family. She found it challenging to balance work responsibilities and her breastfeeding journey.
There is need for policies that promote and encourage breastfeeding.
